 ABOUT

susanches_edited_edited.jpg

Susan Peterkin and Dr. Kindred created the first dermatologic salon, PeterKindred Hair and Scalp Wellness Center, so hair styling and dermatology could finally be bridged to bring hair loss patients a true holistic experience with their hair and health. It is the first full service salon in a dermatology practice. As a master pioneer in the hair care industry, Susan Peterkin has always been at the forefront of hair-care trends, good and bad. Ms. Peterkin found herself frustrated with a trend she began to notice gaining traction in the hair stylist community. She witnessed many popular hair stylists taking non-medical hair loss courses, and then re-branding themselves as “hair-loss” experts. Taking a course in hair loss does not certify someone in the application of hair-loss techniques to hair-styling techniques.

In the dermatology practice, Ms. Peterkin learned directly from Dr. Kindred. As a result, Ms. Peterkin has seen the immense benefits in her techniques by focusing on scalp care and partnering with Dr. Kindred.

Dr.Kindred is a board-certified dermatologist with a niche in alopecia. She is considered a key opinion leader by her colleagues. Early in her career, she partnered with fellow dermatologist Dr. Yolanda Lenzy who noted that, “Hairstylists are at the front lines of hair loss.” The two believed in intentionally building the relationship between hair-stylists and dermatologists.

For far too long, “Hairstylists and Dermatologists have been playing for the same team, but have not been communicating” (Dr. Kindred). Susan Peterkin and Dr. Kindred wanted to create a platform that would target the lack of shared knowledge between hairstylists and dermatologists, so S.T.R.A.N.D (Stylists Training, Researching, and Networking with Dermatologists) was born.

S.T.R.A.N.D will be the first ever educational program that brings leaders in dermatology and hair care together to teach courses, lead talks, create a network dedicated to the continuation of hair care practices, and ultimately give back to their respective fields through research. S.T.R.A.N.D debuted its first course in an informational presentation at the Natural Hair Industry Convention October 8th.

This  course dives deep into the world of healthy hair, shedding light
on the unique challenges and needs this hair type presents. Taught by dermatologists specializing in hair loss alongside your fellow hair stylist, this course offers an in-depth exploration of:

  • Hair Anatomy

  • Common Hair Issues

  • Science-Backed Solutions

  • Cultural Sensitivity

  • Client Consultation

By the end of this course, you'll not only be a stylist but a hair health expert, capable of transforming your clients' lives by promoting healthy, beautiful hair.
